Dr. Smith is a PI at the VA Portland Health Care System and professor of medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. He received his medical degree and PhD at the University of Newcastle in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Upon completion of his medical residency in London, he trained in intensive care at Guy’s Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Smith performed postdoctoral research at the National Institute for Medical Research in London then in the department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Stanford University. He joined OHSU in 2000 and the VAPORHCS in 2012.
